The MILLOAK Herd Dispersal Sale on behalf of J E & J Oakes
VENDOR’S FOREWORD
John and Rosemary purchased Mill Farm in 1985 and brought a nucleus of cattle from the home
family with them, these were Holstein Friesian and formed the Milloak prefix.
Back then the cows were milked through a 6/12 Herringbone parlour and cubicle housed.
In 2013, the decision was made to install 2 robots. Until then, the herd had home bred, but a few
well-bred individuals were purchased to fill the robots to capacity.
Breeding has always been done by using good Holstein bulls which produced milk with good
fat and protein and cows that would last, this was done by using both Semex and Genus bulls,
but since installing the robots we changed to Worldwide Sires.
The herd has always been classified and used as a tool to breed the cows we require for our
system. I came into the business after leaving school some 19 years ago and have enjoyed the
management and breeding side of the business, with the occasional venture out in the show
ring.
Cows are grazed during the summer months. This year has been extremely difficult. On the
back of two very poor forage years, we were right out of fodder and with this year’s forage
also being poor, we have eaten all we had, so very reluctantly we have decided to disperse
the milking herd and in-calf heifers. We are retaining the youngstock with the view of perhaps
starting milking again later in 2025.
We wish you well with your purchases and look forward to seeing you on the 29th at Mill Farm.
